Day 3 Human Australasian Titles
Written by Terry McKenna
Thursday, 18 September 2008
Clean and contestable 2 feet waves greeted day three of the Human Australasian Bodyboarding Titles at Town Beach, Port Macquarie, providing perfect conditions for Australasia's best cadets and grommets to hit the water.
Local knowledge has again proved the key in the Quarter finals of the cadets division, with Liam McLennan of Port Macquarie getting the best single wave score of the entire competition a 9.5. Liam found two barrel sections in the one wave and mangaged to link through with an impressive roll on the inside shorebreak.
The open division and cadets hit the water today for day two of the Human Australasian Bodyboarding Titles in Port Macquarie, NSW.
Conditions drastically improved from the previous days competition, with waves in the 3 - 4 feet range and cross offshore winds providing surfers with clean conditions for the days contest.
The Port Macquarie contingent has continued today with some more solid results, including local whiz kid Charlie Holt who blitzed competitors in his heat, throwing down one of the biggest inverts seen in the competition.
Charlie, whose local break is Town Beach, used his knowledge of the wave over Dane Robillard (W.A.) and James Meth (QLD), choosing to surf closer to the breakwall, whilst the other focused on the outside sandbank and scored a combined wave total of 13.80 out of a possible 20 from judges.
"I was watching the inside all day and I knew it was going to work on the low tide" Charlie said
"I am pretty stoked that the wave have improved for nationals"
Charlie, who has won multiple nationals titles in the grommets and cadets moves into the junior division next year. Charlie is looking to follow the footsteps of former world Champion and Port Macquarie local Damian King and hopes to have a solid year on the 2009 IBA Australasian Pro Tour.
"I am going to try to travel around to as many pro tour events in Australia next year, and hopefully win some money" Charlie said
Round one of the open mens were also hotly contest, Eric Medcalf another Port Macquarie charger finding the highest scores from the judges with a combined wave total of 13.50.
IBA Australasia General Manager, Terry McKenna was happy with the conditions improving and he is looking forward to some of the world best riders hitting the water from Thursday in the Port Mac Pro.
"The surfing today has been awesome and it is great to see everyone raising the bar with the conditions improving, I think that the Pro's will be amazing to watch when they hit the water this Thursday." Terry said
The Human Port Mac Pro, kick off this Thursday and included the likes of Ryan Hardy (WA), Mitch Rawlins (QLD) and Dave Winchester (QLD).
