2009 Team’s Challenge Wrap Up |

The 2009 Teams Challenge, sponsored by No Clones and Aussie Home Loans
Port Macquarie, played out Saturday and Sunday in small but tidy
conditions at Lighthouse Beach. Day one saw small but neat 3 foot waves
that still offered plenty of options for competitive action. Day two,
although slightly smaller, still provided the useful little lefts and
rights that resulted in some impressive wave scores.

As Jenny Hopkins took the microphone at the presentation of the 2009 David “Goose” Gosby Bodyboarding Memorial a conspicuous hush fell on the small crowd at Port’s Breakwall. Jenny is David’s mother and, along with Grandad Gordon Brown, reminded us why we were all together on a wet Saturday afternoon. It was to remember David and all the other PMBA members who have passed away over the years. It was to remember that it’s not always the winning but the spirit of competition and fun that is the inspiration behind the “Goose”.

I’ve been pretty busy of late shaping boards and working with our team riders on their new signature models. The range is finally finished and looking incredible…. So I thought I’d take some time out to fill everyone in on some of the weird and wonderful happenings of 4Play over the past few weeks.

Bodyboarding Association of Tasmania |
|

Tuesday, 17 March 2009 |
The Bodyboarding Association of Tasmania hit the ground running with it's first event for the season held at Rebounds on Saturday 14.03.09. Conditions were a little small around the 2ft mark but some bigger sets occasionally popped up allowing the stoked BAT crew to bust a few spin-roll combos and the occasional invert. The focus of the first event, rather than to score perfect waves was more to welcome our new members in and get memberships and insurance matters sorted - and then to test our comp-organising skills. The outcome was highly positive - we were able to prove once again that yes, Tasmania can have a bodyboarding association where talent exists, the numbers are there to reflect strong interest in competition, that we know how to chip in as a team to run a good event and most of all that we really enjoy doing it.
We kicked-off our season with 5 Divisions - Open Men's, DK, Junior Men's, Cadets and Grommets. With the exception of Open Men's that had enough contestants for quarters and semis the rest were straight-out finals affairs - with the hope of more young riders to join up soon we should see an expansion in our numbers to generate more heats and more competition especially for the Cadets and Grommets in upcoming comps. If you haven't yet joined and still want to, there is still plenty of time - we plan to hold at least another 7 comps before the State Titles in October, with the best 5 results for each person giving them their season points.
Brothers Samuel and Cohen Thomas followed-on from their 2008 foray into State Titles competition to take out their respective Cadet and Grommet BAT season openers. Will Harmsen was a close runner-up to Samuel in the Cadets whilst Wilson "Microwave" Brooks (nicknamed for his small stature and ability to rip the ripples) came in runner-up to Cohen in his first ever contest and was truly stoked to be a part of it all.
The DK comprised mainly Open Men's competitors who usually ride prone, but also DK afficionado James Barwick, who scored three perfect 10s on the day's best wave, a massive float over the Rebounds end section. Charles Ward came in 2nd with a small floater in the dying minutes on the middle peak, edging out Craig Salvo Smith who was frustrated by a lack of consistent quality waves over by the rocks. Ashley Stewart and Ben Carosi rounded out the final 2 placings.
The Juniors was a tightly fought battle seeing Cameron Green victorious over Callum Wells. Thomas Leed scored wave of the heat with a superb opening ride but then failed to materialise another decent scoring wave, coming in 3rd. Ben Carosi just couldn't find a decent one in the deteriorating conditions.
The Open Mens was shaping up to be a great heat, with solid performances from all riders across all early heats. However the testy conditions with a full tide and strengthening onshore around midday played straight into the hands of contest machine Thomas Webster, who patiently waited for his only 2 waves and proceeded to milk them both for all they were worth. Spinning quickly in the pocket and finishing with good strong rolls both times was the formula. Charles Ward just edged younger brother Harley for 2nd place by about 0.5 of a point and Craig Calvo-Smith came in 4th after impressing in the quarters and semis.
All in all it was a successful day. Thanks to Zoe Brooks who expertly tallied all results and sister Gemma who judged for several heats non-stop. Also to Jackie and Peter for getting the BBQ happening with a fine sausage sizzle - donating more than a few freebies the first time around (members note - it's $1 a sausage sanga next time so have your change handy).
For the next round in April we are looking for better waves and will be assessing the swell and wind forecasts in the lead-up to various weekends. If possible we will try and hold event 2 on a Sunday to attract more riders and give those affected by traditional Friday-night festivities some time to recover. But if it's pumping on a Saturday be ready to hit the water! Remember that most of you need to get some more membership money into BAT at the next comp to make this viable - Surfing Australia Memberships for all BAT members are now covered and being sent to Surfing Tasmania this week.
So for now, see you next time around. Keep an eye out on Myspace and Facebook for info re: next comp.
